Terroirs, Soils and Wine Quality

Sunday 9 October

  • -   Departure from Belgium (pick-up times and locations to be announced)
  • -   Arrival, Beaune, Hotel ibis budget, 23 Avenue Charles de Gaulle 21200 Beaune
  • -   5:15 pm: General presentation: La Côte, its landscapes, its subsoils... for a field approach of the soils in the three following days (speaker: Dr. Françoise Vannier)

 Monday 10 October

  • -   Morning: Puligny-Montrachet (AC Leflaive), soil pits opened, tasting Volnay, soil pits opened, tasting.
  • -   Lunch time.
  • -   Afternoon: Saint-Romain (Domaine Martenot), soil pits opened, tasting.
  • -   Dinner: free in Beaune city, unless we find a restaurant for our group.

 Tuesday 11 October

  • -   Morning: Butte de Corton, Domaine Latour, pits opened.
  • -   Lunch time.
  • -   Afternoon: Hautes Côtes de Beaune, Nantoux, Domaine Boris Champy, soil pits opened, tasting.
  • -   Afternoon: Visit of the Hospices de Beaune with an expert in history.
  • -   Dinner: Brasserie au RenDez Vous (38, rue du Faubourg Madeleine).

 Wednesday 12 October

  • -   Morning: Côtes de Nuits, soil pits opened.
  • -   Lunch time
  • -   Afternoon: Marsannay (Sylvain Pataille) soil pits opened; tasting at the Château de Marsannay.
  • -   Return to Belgium.

We will be guided by Dr. Françoise Vannier and Prof. Em. Pierre Curmi (AgroSup Dijon). Dr. Françoise Vannier is a geologist who has a deep knowledge of the geological context of Burgundy. Prof. Em. Pierre Curmi is a soil scientist with a strong expertise in the water regime and hydric properties. He started his carrier in Brazil (ORSTOM, IRD) and joined AgroSup-Dijon in the 1990's. We will furthermore be accompanied by young resarchers and wise wine growers who will guide us in the mysteries of good soils for good wines.
